Fontanassa
In the hills of Gavi, the historic wine- growing area of south-eastern Piedmont, stands the fortified farmhouse of Azienda Fontanassa, built in the 17th century and owned by the Gemme family since 1921. For three generations, grapes have been grown in this stony soil with its clay and iron content.
The Gemmes are proud farming people, they remain true to traditional methods and pay close attention to the vineyards; this is reflected in their decision not to use chemicals at any stage of production. Traditional technology is used in the winery too, and it’s a winning choice, which has resulted in wines with complexity and expressive authenticity.
For the Gemme family, making wine is passion, tradition and art, and these are evident in their singular labels, the creative fruit of Asti-born painter Carlo Carosso, who took inspiration from the features of some of the family members and their dream of producing excellent wines.
